Desk yoga classes
We're excited to be working with companies in Brighton and beyond on desk yoga sessions for those who, well, sit at a desk all day! Whether you've found this page through a referral, or just stumbled across us, below you should find all the information you need to decide if Misfit is a good fit (see what we did there?) for you and your colleagues!
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we're offering desk yoga sessions via Zoom, for employees working from home.
What is Desk Yoga?
Desk yoga is just what it sounds like: yoga that can be done while seated at a desk behind a computer. The focus is to relieve tension in the neck, shoulders and back caused by long periods of sitting in one position while using a PC or laptop. The beauty of desk yoga is that it doesn't require any special clothing or equipment, and even five minutes can bring huge benefits to body and mood.
What happens in a desk yoga session?
Our fully qualified yoga teacher, Nic, will come into your office - or, during the COVID-19 pandemic, join you on Zoom - and take you and your colleagues through a half hour seated yoga session that teaches desk yoga poses and stretches as well as breathing and relaxation exercises. The poses and exercises are all straightforward and easy to remember, and the aim is that by the end of the session, you and your colleagues are not only relaxed and feeling more flexible, but have a tool belt of techniques you can use in the future to keep your body and mind healthy during your desk-based day.
There is no special clothing or equipment required, so you and your colleagues can just step straight into desk yoga and back again without needing to worry about changing, showering, or otherwise faffing about!
Who is this suitable for?
Anyone who spends a large portion of their time sitting at a desk! The poses are straightforward, and can be modified where needed for common injuries or issues such as back pain. We'll invite anyone with more complex concerns to contact us beforehand to discuss how to make the session work for them.
How many people can attend a session, and what sort of space is required?
Because desk yoga involves a lower level of complexity and risk of injury than a standard yoga class, we're happy to teach larger groups than we would for a mat-based class.
Nic needs everyone in the room to be able to see her, so that they can fully follow the demonstrated poses, and the acoustics need to allow her to be heard. On that basis, the largest class we've taught to date was to forty, and the smallest to just three! On Zoom, we restrict class size to a maximum of forty.
If you're not sure if your space will work, just get in touch and we can have a chat. If you're in Brighton and Hove, we can even come and take a look and work out with you how best to deliver the session.
How much does it cost, and what does that include?
If you book a desk yoga training session for your team, you'll get: a telephone chat with Nic beforehand to discuss any particular requirements or issues; a customisable email template to send out to staff promoting the event; your half hour desk yoga training session(s); half an hour afterwards for you and colleagues to speak individually to Nic about anything yoga related, including stretches to address individual needs; follow up support by email for all attendees.
We charge £85 for one training session, or if you have a big team and want to run two concurrent sessions on the same day, that's £150. We don't charge travel expenses within Brighton and Hove, but for companies further afield (including London) we'll also charge for Nic's travel. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we're delivering sessions via Zoom, at a discounted rate of £65 for one session, or £110 for two concurrent sessions.
Discounts are available for charities and non-profits, please contact us to discuss.
If you want us to come back for a refresher session after six months or a year, we'll also give you a discounted rate!
How do I book a session?
Please contact us and we'll give you a call to discuss!
What participants say:
"I came into the session worrying I didn’t have the time, but returned to my desk feeling physically and mentally restored and refreshed. I was a bit nervous a long standing back issue might be aggravated, but needn’t have worried as the stretches were modified for all needs, and were gentle, yet effective.
Nic’s Desk Yoga session helped ease a permanent stiff neck and tight shoulder blades, and I still frequently take a few minutes to do some of the poses we learnt. If you have the opportunity to attend, make sure you go! Your to-do list can wait for 30 minutes and it will be worth it."
